Not long now until The Big 24 exhibition at Blackthorpe Barns, Rougham, Bury St Edmunds IP30 9HZ
This event is organised by region 8 (Suffolk and Essex) of the Quilters' Guild and will be a huge celebration of quilting and textile art from this region.
There are 28 textile groups affiliated to region 8 - more than any other region - and 19 of them will be exhibiting at the Big 24 show.
I will have work on show as two of these groups; Out of the Fold and Spotlight Textiles
'Life's a Bleach!' one day workshop will be running at https://www.thecosycabin.co.uk/ on Saturday 1st June 2024
Working onto a black fabric we will build up layers of surface design using decolourant and household bleach*
I will demonstrate lots of different patterning and design techniques so everyone will leave with two pieces of unique cloth ready for stitch
Cost £45
To book please email mary.cs@sefwi.org.uk
*Note this technique can be very messy and smelly and masks will be worn
Working with cotton organdie this is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Korean Pojagi piecing technique. The end result with be a double sided, semi-transparent panel ideal to hang in a window or against a pale wall.

The Columba silk moth - what will he become? To see the end result, one of a series, visit the 'Textile Connections' exhibition at The Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds from 2nd - 6th July 2024
A date for your diary - the Creative Stitch Graduate Show 2024 is coming round again and will be at Needham Market Community Hall on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July 2024
We will have a display of work from nine students completing the Advanced Stitched Textiles course. A wide variety of experimental and innovative work including 3D pieces, fantasy costumes and installations.
There will be displays from eight Creative Stitched Textiles students taught by my colleague Diane Tompkins and from her extended Cosy Cabin class from last year who just would not go home and insisted upon another year!
Plus work from eight students completing my Bridging the Gap course of students preparing to start the Advanced course next year.
35 student displays in all. So LOTS to see.
Textile Connections were formed in 2021 by students completing the Advanced Stitched Textiles course. As their former tutor I joined the group to help get them established and will exhibit as part of this exhibition.
Group members are: Virginia Ashberry, Anna Ladds, Mary McIntosh, Sarah Moran, Christine Spellar, Rosemary Tyler and Nicky Wrigley
Exhibition venue: The Guildhall, Bury St Edmunds, Guildhall Street IP33 1NX
Dates: Tuesday 2nd to Sat 6th July 2024 10am - 4pm each day
Free Entry
East Anglian Stitched Textiles (E.A.S.T.) have invited me to join as a member from May 2024.
I am thrilled to join this group of talented artists whose work I have admired for many years.
E.A.S.T. works with a mentor Anthea Godfrey and each series of work for exhibition takes two years to make with the first year dedicated to research and design. This slow and thoughtful approach results in a rich body of work.
Having been working very hard over the last few years to produce work for several exhibitions each year this deeper and wider approach is very appealing. I hope and think my work will improve as a result.
'Bridging the Gap' exhibition will be shown at The Grundisburgh House Gallery from 24th April - 7th May 2024

About once a year I take some time out to be a student rather than a tutor. I select a teacher who's work I admire and is completely different to my own. Often this is exploring a different way of working rather than a new technique. It is scary but exhilarating to be out of your comfort zone.
Surrendering yourself to the process and being pulled along by the tutor can be very freeing. The end result is not the most important thing but the chance to explore new ideas, make mistakes without consequence, and just 'play'.
So the opportunity to attend 'A Sense of Place' three day workshop with artist Debbie Lyddon proved irrestisible.
Working alongside other like-minded students was inspiring too, in a friendly and supportive environment.
Preparing for a two day workshop at Eau Brink Studios in June where we will forage for natural materials for mono printing and colouring before spending a second day making up our monoprinted fabric into a semi-transparent double sided hanging using the Pojagi piecing technique.
We will explore several techniques, including working with sheers with wire, before combining them to create a small panel.
All machine stitching. A good way to practice your free motion in a controlled way!
An extra 'Playing with Pojagi' one day workshop will run at The Cosy Cabin, Risby Barns, Bury St Edmunds IP26 6QU on Saturday 25th May 2024
A choice of three different designs and a wide range of colourways. All materials provided for £15.
If you wish to hang your double-sided stained glass inspired hanging in a specific place then please bring the measurements as we can adapt the design to fit.
Simple machine stitching.
There are 28 textile groups who are affliliated to region 8 (Suffolk and Essex) of the Quilter's Guild. All were invited to have a free stand at the Big 24 Quilt Show and 17 groups will be exhibiting at the show.
This will be a fantastic celebration of quilting and textile art from the East Anglia region.
I am co-ordinating the affilated groups and will have work on show with two of the affilated groups.
The group have had two very successful major exhibitions of new work at the Pond Gallery in Snape Maltings with 'Spotlight on....East Anglia' in 2022 and 'Spotlight on....Heritage' in 2023. They are now well on their way to producing a third new series 'Spotlight on......architecture' with the first joint group piece being revealed at the Big 24 Quilt Show in April 2024
Now the group is well established it is time for me to leave and concentrate on making work for solo exhibition. I wish all members of Spotlight Textiles all the very best for the future
Applications are invited for the Creative Stitch Advanced Stitched Textiles course starting in September 2024.
This will be the final course I will teach as principal tutor at Creative Stitch. The course will run for one year with the opportunity to continue onto a second year completing in July 2026.
For more information please see Creative Stitch Courses or email mary.cs@sefwi.org.uk
textileseastfair is always a treat to brighten the early part of the year. I will have a stand as usual this year demonstrating the 'Playing with Pojagi' technique and offering a variety of packs for sale.
I will also be exhibiting as part of Out of the Fold as we will be showing the 'Unfolding' exhibition series including our range of fans.
My 'Unfolding' piece shown at The Guildhall exhibition is too large for the Textiles East boards so look out for a brand new piece at St Ives
Out of the Fold will also exhibit a range of framed pieces - some old, some new, as part of the show - again look out for new work from me
The Retreat is open to all members of the Quilters' Guild with a series of talks, demonstrations and social events over the course of the whole weekend.
My talk/demo is called "From Trash to Treasure" looking at ways of transforming throwaway items such as newspaper, teabags, sweet wrappers into pieces of textile art. Plus ways of using old net curtains and worn out bras to create highly textured surface pieces of 3D work
My' To have and to hold' series made using dress pattern tissue will also feature.
One feature of the demonstration of the paper lamination process I use to convert paper into a stitchable fabric. For more information on how to book for the retreat please visit https://www.quiltersguildshop.org.uk/products/recycle-repurpose-online-retreat-20-21st-january-2024
The early bird discount of £40 for the whole weekend is still available for the next few days
