Lovely Lutradur

Nine 'Lovely Lutradur' pieces ready to be made up into vessels from the first workshop using this technique at www.thecosycabin.co.uk/

On this new workshop we explore the properties of this spunbond product and first stitch, then colour, add some 'bling' and finally burn to distress before making up into a 3D form.

We did have to do battle with the painted bondaweb but the end results were great. Thank you to my student for testing the method.

If you fancy havong a play with lutradur the next workshop will be at The Octagon, Bar Hill, Cambs on Friday 26th May

Course fee £45

Going into Production

The Sutton Hoo mask design first commissioned by the Quilters' Guild for the AGM held in Suffolk in 2022 has proved to be an instantly recognisable image brought to life by surface design and stitch.

This is offered as a workshop called 'Making your mark(al)' and original framed stitched versions are available for sale - each one different - at forthcoming exhibitions.

In an exciting new departure I have had the design printed onto fabric as a repeat to be able to make up into tote bags. Not exactly mass production but a quicker way of producing an original design and available at a good price.

The bags should be on sale at the Spotlight Textiles https://spotlighttextiles.blogspot.com/ exhibition at The Pond Gallery, Snape Maltings, Snape IP17 1SP from 28th April until 3rd May

Creative Textile Studio at Festival of Quilts 2023

Very excited to be taking part in the Creative Textile Studio at the Festival of Quilts 2023 https://www.thefestivalofquilts.co.uk/

This wet studio will have a whole series of demonstrations every day of the show by leading contemporary textile artists such as clairebenn, christinechester and leahhiggins. Find us at stand CS20

I will be demonstrating the 'Putting on the Glitz' technique building up layers of surface design with paints, sheers, transfoils and glitter film. There will be lots of examples or work using this technique as well as packs of materials to purchase.

My slots are Saturday 5th August  1.45pm - 5.30pm

Sunday 6th August 1.45pm - 4pm

Playing with Pojagi - vintage style

For the 'Spotlight on......Heritage' exhibition coming up at Snape Maltings https://brittenpearsarts.org/whats-on from 28th April until 3rd May 2023 all members of the Spotlight Textiles group were challenged to make a piece of work using an 'inherited' or vintage fabric.

I have been collecting old lace for several years including some from my great grandmother (the trimmings from an old pair of bloomers and nightdress) and buying up pieces from Braintree Textile Fair and charity shop finds.

My lace stash was further enhanced last weekend at the STARS www.starstextiles.co.uk/ members day when Susan was selling off her mother's collection of materials including some beautiful lace collars.

Pojagi is perfect for showing off double-sided fabrics and especially those which allow the light to show through such as lace and cutwork. The felled seam piecing method encloses all the edges to give a neat finish.

Here are sections being created with vintage lace incorporated with cotton organdie.

The Pojagi seams also become a design feature and cast a shadow when hung against the light.

This is a small section from the work in progress. The full and finished piece "White Collar Work" will be exhibited as part of the Spotlight Textiles exhibition.

Venue: Pond Gallery, Snape Maltings, Suffolk IP17 1SP
Date: Friday 28th April until Wed 3rd May 2023
Time: 10am - 4pm

Metal Magic

Sometimes revisitng a technique pays dividends. We were exploring using metals in the Advanced Stitched Textiles course AST Foundation Course and added used Nespresso coffee pods to the usual selection of tomato puree tubes and drinks cans to heat then stitch.

Liking the result - but what next?

Playing with Pojagi

The 'Transfer of Affections' piece using blue embroidery transfers, partially stitched, and combined with pojagi style piecing. This was exhibited at Textile East 2023 as part of the Spotlight Textiles exhibition.

Using cotton organdie which takes procion dye extremely well and has a lovely crisp quality which is prefect for Pojagi

Trasnfer of Affections will be exhibited as part of the Spotlight Textiles exhibition 'Spotlight on....Heritage' at the Pond Gallery, Snape Maltings, Suffolk IP17 1SP from 28th April - 3rd May 2023

This piece is loosely inspired by the Gerhard Richter stained glass windows in Cologne Cathedral where the sun casts a glorious coloured light on the marble floor. In Pojagi the double-sided seams form an integral part of the design with the colour mixing of dyed fabrics.

This is a sample for the one day workshop 'Playing with Pojagi' at The Cosy Cabin https://www.thecosycabin.co.uk/workshops-events/  on Tuesday 14th March 2023.

Venue: The Cosy Cabin, Risby Barns, Risby, Bury St Edmunds IP28 6QU

Date: Tuesday 14th March  10am - 4pm

Cost: £45

To book please email mary.cs@sefwi.org

Materials can be provided for £10

I plan lots more 'Playing with Pojagi' pieces with a piece inspired by the Gaudi windows in the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and th John Piper windows in Eton College Chapel next on the list
