Not everyone's a winner

Ghost Nets
Now that the Norfolk Makers Festival is over I can share my piece which was not selected for the juried exhibition.

The theme was 'Under the Surface'

My work is all made from plastic - bubble wrap, plastic bags, plastic water bottle, fruit net and laminating pouches

Ghost Nets (detail)
It was inspired by reading about the so called 'Ghost Nets' which are large fishing nets which have become separated from their vessels and are now in the world's oceans scooping up plastics and posing a threat to marine life.

Conservation groups are trying to locate these nets and remove them from the seas.

Ghost nets (detail)
The close-up images show the layers of plastics captured under the surface and held together by fusing with a soldering iron and machine and hand stitch

The work is quite large 12" x 39" and is tray framed on a deep edged canvas

Whilst disappointed that it was not selected for the Norwich exhibition I do understand as it was difficult to photograph; the plastic is very shiny and reflects the light. The jurors only had two images on which to base their decision. However I do intend to show the work as part of the 'Textile Connections' exhibition in July 2024

The Big 24 Quilt Show

Not long now until The Big 24 exhibition at Blackthorpe Barns, Rougham, Bury St Edmunds IP30 9HZ

This event is organised by region 8 (Suffolk and Essex) of the Quilters' Guild and will be a huge celebration of quilting and textile art from this region.

There are 28 textile groups affiliated to region 8 - more than any other region - and 19 of them will be exhibiting at the Big 24 show.

I will have work on show as two of these groups; Out of the Fold and Spotlight Textiles

Out of the Fold will show their collection of handmade fans first seen as part of the 'Unfolding' exhibition

Spotlight Textiles are showing a joint piece inspired by an image of Framlingham Castle. Handing over my 'slice' was the last thing I did before leaving this group so I am looking forward to seeing the completed hanging at the show!

There are also almost 100 quilts on display from members throughout the region and I will have two pieces in the main show. Plus ten traders, tombola, raffle and refreshments. Lots of see, win and buy. Bring cash!

The show runs from Friday 26th - Sun 28th April, 10am - 4pm each day

Entry £5

E.A.S.T.

East Anglian Stitched Textiles (E.A.S.T.) have invited me to join as a member from May 2024.

I am thrilled to join this group of talented artists whose work I have admired for many years.

E.A.S.T. works with a mentor Anthea Godfrey and each series of work for exhibition takes two years to make with the first year dedicated to research and design. This slow and thoughtful approach results in a rich body of work.

Having been working very hard over the last few years to produce work for several exhibitions each year this deeper and wider approach is very appealing. I hope and think my work will improve as a result.

'Bridging the Gap' exhibition will be shown at The Grundisburgh House Gallery from 24th April - 7th May 2024

A Sense of Place with Debbie Lyddon

About once a year I take some time out to be a student rather than a tutor. I select a teacher who's work I admire and is completely different to my own. Often this is exploring a different way of working rather than a new technique. It is scary but exhilarating to be out of your comfort zone.

Surrendering yourself to the process and being pulled along by the tutor can be very freeing. The end result is not the most important thing but the chance to explore new ideas, make mistakes without consequence, and just 'play'.

So the opportunity to attend 'A Sense of Place' three day workshop with artist Debbie Lyddon proved irrestisible.

Working alongside other like-minded students was inspiring too, in a friendly and supportive environment.

Day one was 'Seeing' as we explored the marina and marshes of Tollesbury in the Blackwater Estuary. Such an brilliant place. My focus was the simplest of posts in the water which felt so small and vulnerable to all the elements of wind and water and changed in a second according to the light.

After observation and drawing outside we tried to capture these on paper

Considering words and phrases to describe our obsevations helped deepen the connection to the sense of place

The end result from day one was a folded map book using one of our painted papers

Day two was 'Listening' as we went on a sound walk to try and express what we heard using mark making and drawing - really hard! What does the sound of a car tyre on wet road look like?

Again we tried out our ideas on paper, trying to capture the rhythmn, resonance and colour of what we had heard.

My selected design on paper to be interpreted in stitch. Folds and scores infused with ink.

Very much still a work in progress but this is the beginnings of my stitched interpretation

Day three was 'Touching' when we used our collected found objects from Tollesbury to inspire the making of a coloured and waxed cloth bag to hold the items made on the workshop.

I endeavoured to use the found items of a rusty nail and washer picked up in the marina as a fastening device and stitching to mimic that from the soundscape

A great three days. Debbie Lyddon is an excellent tutor and I would highly recommend the 'A Sense of Place' course which is now available through

Thankyou to Lorraine Traer-Clarke for organising the workshop and to the members of Blackwater Textiles

Monoprint explorations

Preparing for a two day workshop at Eau Brink Studios in June where we will forage for natural materials for mono printing and colouring before spending a second day making up our monoprinted fabric into a semi-transparent double sided hanging using the Pojagi piecing technique.

But as it is February there are no leaves on the trees so I have had to adapt and invent some leaves in the form of simple stamps to use instead. These will obviously last longer than real leaves so we will explore making these on the workshop too.

The fabirc used will be my current favourite cotton organdie which take all sorts of colour pigment really well and retains it's semi-transparent nature as well as the wonderful crispness

I have been working with black acrylic paint and inks in red and orange here but on the workshop students will be able to work in whatever colour they wish. We will make lots of prints and choose our favourites. There will also be dyed/coloured organdie to use for the Pojagi piecing.

To book this workshop please contact www.eaubrinkstudio.co.uk/ or telephone 01553 611009

Goodbye to Spotlight Textiles

I have been proud to be a member of the Spotlight Textiles exhibiting group, formed by some of the Advanced Stitched Textiles class of 2020.

The group have had two very successful major exhibitions of new work at the Pond Gallery in Snape Maltings  with 'Spotlight on....East Anglia' in 2022 and 'Spotlight on....Heritage' in 2023. They are now well on their way to producing a third new series 'Spotlight on......architecture' with the first joint group piece being revealed at the Big 24 Quilt Show in April 2024

Now the group is well established it is time for me to leave and concentrate on making work for solo exhibition. I wish all members of Spotlight Textiles all the very best for the future

One feature of the demonstration of the paper lamination process I use to convert paper into a stitchable fabric.
